SRI LANKA ASSAY OFFICE

The Sri Lankan Assay Office was established in Colombo in 1981 with the intention of providing consumer protection service for the public against fraud & of the trade against unfair competition.

As a measure to upgrade the jewellery quality in accordance with the international standards, rules & regulations were introduced by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority. (Act No.50 of 1993) where as the Assay laboratory was equipped with advanced & sophisticated analytical equipment for assaying of precious metals.

Analytical Methods Practiced.

1. Cupellation method ( fire assay)
2. Potentiometric titration
3. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry
4. X-ray fluorescence spectro metry
